The recent enactment of the Lymphedema Treatment Act (LTA) by Congress in late 2022 mandates Medicare coverage of supply items for lymphedema patients encompassing compression garments and bandaging supplies, with coverage starting on January 1, 2024. Since the inception of the LTA in 2010, the medi® team has played a pivotal role in the passage of the bill and advising the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through the United States Medical Compression Advocacy group to formulate coverage and fee schedules.
CMS has identified the needs of both daytime and nighttime garments to effectively treat and maintain lymphedema. In addition, custom-made or made-to-measure garments have been included to accommodate advanced stages of lymphedema. Finally, both graduated compression stockings (elastic circular and flat-knit) and adjustable compression wraps (hook and loop wraps) have been included in the fee schedule.
Below is the reimbursement schedule per affected body part:
• Three garments (either elastic stocking or adjustable wrap) EACH every 6 months
• Two nighttime garments EACH every 2 years
CMS has introduced dozens of new codes with applicable fee schedules for an array of products and differing levels of service to properly fit and supply to the patient. A schedule for your region can be found on your favorite DMEPOS website.
