Welcome back to The Clinical Minute! In this edition, Manager of Clinical Education Sam Brouillette, CP, CFo, shares with us a remarkable device—the ST&G NextStep Foot with Glide Ankle.
This relatively new polycentric ankle system allows for two degrees of dorsiflexion during the swing phase and an impressive 15 degrees of plantar flexion. These features provide users with exceptional control, especially on uneven surfaces, declines, inclines, and even during everyday activities like sitting and standing.
The NextStep Foot with Glide Ankle is PDAC approved for L5972 and L5968. While many clinicians may associate L5968 with hydraulic ankles, it's important to note the full PDAC description for this code is "addition to lower limb prosthesis, multi-axial ankle with swing phase active dorsiflexion feature." This design being polycentric is very unique and allows it to cater to a wide range of patients, from K2 all the way up to transitional, low, and moderate K3 patients.
Another aspect that sets the NextStep Foot with Glide Ankle apart is the build height of 3.125" (excluding the foot shell). The compact design makes it one of the shortest feet on the market today. With a foot size range of 23 to 28 centimeters and a weight capacity of up to 275 pounds, it's a versatile choice for a broad spectrum of patients. Additionally, this system comes with a 24-month warranty and includes the spectra sock and foot shell.

As a patient makes contact with the ground, the ankle smoothly transitions into 15 degrees of plantar flexion. As they continue to roll over the foot, they experience two degrees of dorsiflexion during the swing phase.
