Senior Clinical Education Specialist Liz Hillen, M.Ed., CPO, LPO, is back to provide a quick overview of the Lymphedema Treatment Act.

What is the Lymphedema Treatment Act?

The Lymphedema Treatment Act is a federal law that was passed in December 2022 to improve insurance coverage of prescribed compression garments and bandaging supplies required for Lymphedema care. Medicare coverage of Lymphedema supplies began on January 1, 2024.

What is Lymphedema?

According to the Mayo Clinic, Lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid. It most often occurs in the arm or leg but can also affect the chest wall, abdomen, neck, and genitals.

Lymphedema can affect over 200,000 patients annually and can be chronic. For some patients, it can last for up to a lifetime.
